"Oshii's highly personal symbolism appears even in his more mainstream works like Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, the first and second Patlabor films, and Ghost in the Shell. His ultimate contribution to experimental anime is the 1985 film Tenshi no Tamago ("Angel's Egg"), which features beautiful art direction from character designer and now fine artist Yoshitaka Amano. Told with minimal dialogue and maximum Christian imagery, Angel's Egg shows a little girl living out her life in a gloomy, gothic, abandoned city. After she symbolically gives birth to the titular egg, she meets a Christ-like figure (complete with cross) who accompanies her to an ending that is beautiful, transcendental, and entirely depressing. When once asked directly what the cryptic Angel's Egg is supposed to mean, Oshii replied that he himself doesn't even know, the classic defensive for for a true avant garde visionary."
